USFA On-Duty Death: Maryland

EMMITSBURG, Md. — The United States Fire Administration (USFA) has announced the on-duty death of Chief Engineer Eugene Cervi, 60, of the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department on 6 July 2026.

On July 5, 2026, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Chief Engineer Eugene Cervi drove the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company apparatus in response to a possible water rescue. Once on scene, he assisted with the deployment of the department’s boat. The incident concluded around 8:00 p.m. At approximately 3:00 a.m. on July 6, 2026, Chief Engineer Cervi suffered a cardiovascular event and was taken to a hospital where he passed away later that day.
