USFA On-Duty Death: North Carolina

The United States Fire Administration has announced the death of Firefighter Johnny Alvin Goines, 69, of the Verona Volunteer Fire Department on 23 November 2024.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, Firefighter Johnny Alvin Goines responded to an emergency call made at 10:46 p.m. reporting a motor vehicle accident. A second emergency call was made at 11:05 p.m. reporting a vehicle in a ditch. Verona Volunteer Fire Department and Onslow County Emergency Medical Services responded to the second call and found Firefighter Goines unresponsive inside of his vehicle. He was returning home from the first call when he was found. Firefighter Goines was immediately transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 23, 2024. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.
