COLUMBIA, S.C. – An Irmo firefighter was killed and six other firefighters were injured while fighting an apartment fire on Friday.

Columbia-Richland Fire Department Chief Aubrey Jenkins said Firefighter James Muller was one of three firefighters caught in a collapse during the fire, according to The Post and Courier.

Chief Jenkins told reporters that firefighters could see smoke from the scene while responding and called for a second alarm when they arrived. An occupant was reportedly rescued during the fire attack.

“Once we began to fight this fire, it got so bad at some point we had to call a mayday,” Jenkins said. During the initial press conference, he stated that three firefighters were trapped inside.

Five firefighters from Columbia and two from Irmo were injured and transported to the hospital. Muller was one of the Irmo firefighters. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

At the time of reporting, there were no details on the firefighting operations and collapse.
