FAYETTE COUNTY, West Virginia – West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced the death of a state forestry worker fighting a wildfire in Fayette County on 13 April 2023, according to local news outlets.

Cody J. Mullens, of the West Virginia Forestry Division, was fatally injured by a falling tree.

There were no details about Mullens’ death. The fire was burning along Route 61 in Armstrong Creek and has been reported as both a brush fire and wildfire. WBOY reported the fire was contained on Friday evening, and Metro News West Virginia reported the fire burned at least 3,000 acres.

The most recent wildfire line of duty death for 2023 was the death of a forest technician in Virginia in March of this year.
