BUFFALO – A Buffalo firefighter was killed on Wednesday while fighting a fire inside a commercial structure.

An explosion or backdraft occurred resulting in an interior collapse and a mayday, according to Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo. Renaldo said the firefighter, from Engine 2, was approximately 30 to 40 feet inside the building when the collapse happened.

Other firefighters were able to evacuate and there were no reported injuries.

The structure was being renovated at the time of the fire.

This is the first interior line of duty death in 2023.
